GHANA 2014 BUDGET

The Ghana Mine workers Union of the TUC has noted with concern government's abrupt unilateral decision to withdraw the military and other state security personnel from mining concessions of the major mining companies.

Mr Eric Gyimah is the Deputy General Secretary of GMWU.

In a statement issued in Accra and signed by its Deputy General Secretary, Eric Gyimah, the Union recalled how it congratulated government recently when it decided to provide security for the formal subsector of the industry when it became the target for indiscriminate scramble by illegal miners aided by the Chinese and other Ghanaian collaborators.

The statement said the industry is heavily challenged with the falling prices of gold and other metals on the international market coupled with other challenges culminating in the threat of more than 4,000 mine workers likely to lose their jobs.

In this regard, the least the mine workers Union expected government to do was to add to the burdened industry to aggravate an already turbulent development in the mining sector describing the withdrawal as untimely, unwelcome and counterproductive.

The Ghana Mine Workers Union on behalf of the over 20,000 members therefore urges government to reconsider the policy decision adding that it must allow the status quo to remain until such a time that the Chinese and other foreign led ‘galamsey’ menace are eliminated or brought under control.
